Helen V. Saddlemire, 90, formerly of Guilderland, died on Friday, January 25, 2013 at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center.Helen was born in Perth on February 4, 1922, the daughter of the late Andrew and Stella Violyn. She moved to the Guilderland area in 1956. Helen grew up on a farm in Perth, NY. She was employed as a weaver in the Amsterdam rug mills, preformed defense work at General Electric during WWII, operated Federal Bake Shops in Amsterdam, Hartford CT. and Schenectady. Helen and her husband later operated the Altamont Bakery in Altamont. She also worked driving school bus for the Guilderland School District and retired from the Cash Control Dept. at Macy's in Colonie. Helen was a talented cake decorator and an avid bowler. She loved working in her vegetable garden, BINGO, Mohegan Sun bus trips, outings with friends and loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of the Guilderland Elk's Auxiliary and attended Lynwood Reformed Church. In addition to her parents, Helen was also predeceased by husbands Aloysius "Al" Pikul and Ernest "Ernie" Saddlemire, her brothers; Roman, Frank, Henry and Walter Violyn and her sister Mary Niemczyk. She is survived by her son Richard Pikul and his wife Diane, their two children and their four grandchildren, her daughter Eileen Pikul- Bass and her husband Ron Bass, their daughter Shaina Bass, and several nieces and nephews. At Helen's request, funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Amsterdam. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the Lynwood Reformed Church Memorial Fund, 3714 Carman Rd, Schenectady, NY 12303. Helen's family would like to thank the D-wing staff at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center for their excellent care during Helen's stay since April 2008.
