Helen C. Evans, 99, died Monday, November 28, 2017 at Kingsway Nursing Home, Schenectady. Born on August 6, 1917 in Hankins, NY, Helen was the daughter of Alvah and Lena Chandler. She attended school in Deposit, NY where she proudly played on Deposit High School’s 1934 champion girls’ basketball team. Helen received her nursing degree from Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing in Montclair, New Jersey, and as a student met her husband of 45 years, Francis J. “Bob” Evans while horseback riding. She practiced nursing in several hospitals while Bob was stationed overseas in World War II. After moving to Callicoon, N.Y. they raised two sons together, and Helen studied evenings to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in education from SUNY Oneonta while working as a school nurse at Delaware Valley Central School. After more than 20 years with the school system, Helen retired to Bradenton, Florida with her husband where they spent many happy years until his death in 1986. Always doing for others, Helen volunteered with the American Red Cross for 25 years until she moved north to live with her son Robert and his family when she was 90 years old. In addition to Robert (Donna) Evans of Niskayuna, Helen is survived by her grandsons, Ryan of Washington, D.C. and Adam, of Rochester, N.Y., and Pat Evans McGurgin, of Buffalo, widow of her older son James Chandler Evans, who died in 1977. Helen is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, Alvah and Ralph. A private memorial service will be held a later date.
