Gerald “Jerry” J. Smith, son of Dana Barnes Smith and Mable C. Tubbs, died Thursday, October 12, 2017 at home surrounded by his loving family at the age of 85, after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Jerry was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School and the Albany Business College. He worked at ALCO (American Locomotive Co.) before entering the US Air Force. He worked as a Personnel Manager for the former Maqua Co. then went on to Ellis Hospital, becoming a Vice President. After retiring from Ellis Hospital, he joined Schenectady Radiology as their Business Manager. Jerry enjoyed the outdoors, hiking with family and friends, creating paths through the woods in Mariaville, camping and traveling. While wintering in Myrtle Beach, Jerry took delight in walking along the beach, playing cards and socializing with his “winter family”. Jerry brought joy, harmony and laughter to everyone he met. He will be truly missed. Jerry was a member of the Mohawk Hiking Club, a long time member of the Mont Pleasant High School class of 1950 reunion committee, a committee member of the Mariaville Civic Association (MCA), the Rotterdam Elks and the Sampson Air Base Veterans Association. In addition to his parents, Jerry was also predeceased by his brother; Dana Charles Smith. He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Adele Milbank Smith, his children; Karen Smith (Dave Stillwell) of Clifton Park, Sharon (Bill) Butterfield of Rotterdam and Wayne Smith (Sue Burch) of Rotterdam, his sisters: Elinore Farnum of Schenectady and Dawn (Ed) Farry of Port Orange, Fla., Grandchildren; Amy (Tommy) Polito, Wendy (Kris) Spezza, Chase Burch, Dane Burch (Renee Stoller) and Derek Stillwell (Jessica) and his great grandchildren; Logan Butterfield, Justina Spezza, Rose and Kimberly Burch and Vincent Stillwell. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 4-7 pm at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. A memorial service will be held on Monday, 11am at Zion Lutheran Church, 153 Nott Terrace, Schenectady. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mariaville Civic Association, c/o N. Cutitta, 794 South Shore Rd.
