Gene J Verteramo

October 22, 1930 — April 26, 2022

Rotterdam – Gene J. Verteramo, 91, passed away on Tuesday, April 26th, 2022 with his family by his side. Born in Schenectady, Gene was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Romanelli) Verteramo and a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School. He honorably served in the US Army during the Korean War. Stationed in Germany, Gene made his way up the ranks to Sergeant. It was after returning to the states that he met his beloved wife, Annette “Dolly” DiDonato. They were married on February 14, 1954 and enjoyed 61 years of marriage together. For over 45 years, Gene worked as manager of Bellevue Hardware on Altamont Avenue. There he used his expertise and extreme handiness helping customers fix any problem they may have. Besides being very handy, Gene was a skilled woodworker making many beautiful pieces for family and friends. Gene was an avid golfer and bowler, two sports which he greatly enjoyed and excelled at. He was also a die-hard New York Yankees fan. Gene had a wonderful sense of humor and had jokes for days; nobody told a joke like Gene. He also enjoyed dancing, especially after a glass of his favorite scotch. Gene loved his family more than anything. He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend. Gene leaves behind his devoted and loving daughters, Nancy (Ken) Bobar and Jeanie (Louis) Masullo; his granddaughter, Julie (Eric) Nous and great granddaughter, Ava Nous. He also leaves behind his sister, Angela (Andy) Civale; sister-in-law, Evelyn DiDonato as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins, both here and abroad. Besides his parents, Gene was predeceased by his beloved wife, Annette “Dolly” Verteramo; his grandchildren, Nicholas and Gary Masullo, and siblings, Theresa Verteramo (Tony), Michael Veteramo (Vivian & Betty) and James Verteramo (Angie). Calling hours will be held on Friday, from 9am-10:45am at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. Masks are requested by all in attendance. A mass of Christian burial will begin at 11:30am at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church. Entombment with military honors will follow at Memory Gardens in Colonie. Gene’s family would like to thank the staff of N2 at Baptist Health Nursing and Rehab Center, especially Darnell and Norma for the loving care they provided to Gene during his time there. They would also like to thank Gene’s cousin, Ida Ruggiero for all her support, help, love and dedication to Gene and his family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gene’s name may be made to the Schenectady City Mission, 425 Hamilton Street, Schenectady, NY 12305.
