Schenectady- Gary Edward Vitek died on July 15, 2021 after a short illness. Born April 9th, 1946 in Schenectady, New York to Jane Gresham and Edward Vitek, he was the oldest of three sons. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Snyder; daughters from a previous marriage, Susan Petralia and Meredith Vitek; stepdaughters Raeann Trifilo-Olds and Sandra Page; brothers Thomas Vitek (Linda Dugan) and William Vitek (Maria); six nieces and nephews; and his favorite sister-in-law, Catherine Vitek. Gary was a licensed mortician, and early in his career he worked as a funeral director—his dream job. He then spent many years employed in a variety of positions at General Electric in Schenectady. His greatest gifts were his sense of humor, musicianship, and positive take on life. When asked once by a coworker if he ever has a bad day, he answered “Of course I do, but you won’t know about it.” He was quick with a joke and a smile, played piano, organ, and sang for appreciative audiences in churches, on stage, and at family gatherings. Gary was nicknamed “The Mayor and DJ” at the Troy Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, where he lived for the last two years of his life. He was much loved by staff and residents alike. Special thanks and gratitude to all the folks there who cared for him, and for the professional and compassionate attention he received from the nurses at Unity Hospice of Troy. No calling hours or services are planned.
