Rotterdam- Fred J. Saccocio, Sr., 78, passed away on April 22, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.Born and raised in the Bellevue neighborhood of Schenectady, he was the son of the late John and Rose DeLorenzo Saccocio.Fred graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and served in the United States Army in Germany in the early 1950s.Fred also graduated from Siena College, where he played on the baseball team. For most of his career Fred was a self-employed businessman and salesman.He served as Rotterdam's Deputy Supervisor during the 1970s.Fred loved all sports, especially baseball.He was a standout baseball and fast pitch softball player, playing many years at the Country Inn and Sportsman Park.He was the manager of the Rotterdam Babe Ruth 1980 All-Star team that won the Babe Ruth World Series. Fred was dedicated to and dearly loved by his family.He is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Shirley (Passmore) Saccocio; four sons, John (Lisa), of Malta, NY, Michael (Carol) of Glenville, NY, Patrick (Susan) of Rotterdam, NY and Fred Jr. (Sheri) of Rotterdam, NY: thirteen grandchildren, Matthew, Christina, Anthony, Jaclyn, Michael, Laura, Zachary, Daniel, Hannah, Katie, Jenna, Madeline and Jeffrey; brother, Richard Saccocio, Florida. The family extends their special thanks to the ICU Team at Ellis Hospital. Calling hours will be held Friday, April 26 from 5 to 8 pm at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam.Friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial to be held Saturday 9 am at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 806 Union St. Schenectady.
