Evelyn J Hewitt

Evelyn J. Hewitt, 84, of Rotterdam, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at Ellis Hospital. Born in Amsterdam, NY, the daughter of the late Edmund and Nancy Balcikonis Gardner, Evelyn was a graduate of Wilbur Lynch High School. As a teenager, Evelyn was diagnosed with Polio and later in life with Post Polio Syndrome, but she never let it slow her down. She did clerical work at General Electric for several years before taking a job at Ellis Hospital where she worked for many years in the admitting office. She was a devoted Catholic, and was a member of St. John the Evangelist Church. Evelyn enjoyed reading, music and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was also predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph G. Hewitt, who died in 2014, her daughter Susan Hewitt and sister, Marion Tuzio. She is survived by three children; Nancy Hewitt and Peter Hewitt, both of Schenectady, Joseph (Donna) Hewitt of Oneonta, one sister; Janet Palleschi of Schenectady as well as several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, 11 am at St. John the Evangelist Church, 806 Union St., Schenectady. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be private.
