Eugene A Nowak

Rotterdam- Eugene A. Nowak, 87, passed away after a brief illness on Wednesday September 4, 2013 at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady NY .Gene was born in Dunkirk NY the son of the late Edmund A. and Frances Lutzkowiak Nowak. He graduated from Dunkirk High School and enlisted in the Army Serving in Korea from 1944 to 1946. During his time in the service his parents relocated to Schenectady and Gene Joined them after his honorable discharge. He worked for his father in the Edmund A. Nowak Construction Company and later became a state employee for the Office of General Services and retired after over 30 years of service. For many years Gene belonged to the Schenectady Racing Pigeon Club and took great pleasure in raising and racing birds. He also belonged to the Rotterdam Elks Lodge 2157 but his greatest pleasure was sharing time with his two granddaughters. Gene is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years Barbara (Shickle) Nowak, his loving daughter Lisa and her husband William Atchinson andhis two granddaughters Samantha and Katelyn Atchinson. In addition he leaves his sister in law Lorraine Shickle Clute and her husband George. He is also survived by his Aunt Louise Nowak, his nieces Gail (William) Delanney, Patricia (Mike) Tierney, Amy (Scot) Kimball, Jennifer (Bill) Phelps and nephew Donald MacCallum and their families as well as several cousins. He was predeceased by his sister Mary Jane and her husband Donald MacCallum. Family and friends are invited to call at the DeMarco Stone Funeral Home Inc 1605 Helderberg Ave Rotterdam on Sunday September 8, 2013 from 4 pm to 8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday September 9 ,2013 at 9:30 am at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church Princetown Road Rotterdam. Interment with full military honorswill follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery.
