Schenectady, NY. Enza Mastroianni age, 88, passed away Monday November 17, 2025.
Born in La Province de Frosinone Sora, Italy to the Late Paolo and Assunta (DiCarlo) Martini.
Enza emigrated to the U.S. via a ship with a trunk full of belongings. A temporary stay in Queens, NY then calling Schenectady her home.
Enza worked in a shoe factory in Caracas stitching intricate designs in leather shoes then for Cheltingham Manufacturing as an expert zipper and cuff seamstress. She sewed all her daughter’s clothes including her first pair of leather ballerina slippers. She didn’t stop there, she also learned to sew draperies, curtains and pillows with left over fabric from the Carl Company. Ursula of Switzerland graciously allowed Enza to sew sample dresses for the shop.
Enza was best known for her authentic Romana cooking, making hands down the best sauce, pasta, meatballs and pizza. No one topped her Pigna (hand beaten batter) and wine, Muscato and Lambrusco. Family and friends always left after a visit full or tipsy.
Her grandsons always said, “Nonna’s cooking was better than mom’s because it was made with love”.
Enza is predeceased by her husband Giuseppe Mastroianni, newborn grandson, Mark C. O’Neal, here brother, Antonio and sister Elena.
Enza is survived by her daughter Assunta Mastroianni, who made sure she got to shop at Macys for her grandsons’ birthdays and Christmas then ending the day with lunch at the Blue Ribbon Diner. Her beloved grandsons, Isaiah T. Mastroianni of Syracuse and Amir Lakroum of Halfmoon whom adored their Nonna. Her priority was always to make sure care packages with homemade cookies, meatballs and chicken cutlets were mailed to them when away from home. They always called Nonna for cooking advice, to be fed or for some chocolate. Let’s not forget to mention the great grand cat Nigazz. Enza found out he loved Stella Doro Marguerite cookies dipped in coffee and made sure he was well stocked.
Also surviving is her sister Savina her brother Albino along with many nieces and nephews across the globe.
The family would like to thank the staff at Schenectady Center who in the end did their best to make her comfortable, and to Mimi and Rocco for taking the time to sit with her.
