Rotterdam – Elizabeth “Betty” Staroba, 92, passed away on Sunday, November 18th, 2018. Betty was born in Voorheesville to her parents, the late Harry and Michaelina (Kulpa) Tymchyn. Betty and her 8 siblings grew up on The Farm and she continued to enjoy the large family gatherings there into adulthood. Educated in a one room school house, Betty went on to work briefly for Niagara Mohawk as a secretary before becoming a full time homemaker, raising her 2 daughters and cultivating her skills in the kitchen. Betty had a passion for cooking and baking and shared her love of the craft with everyone from her family to her neighbors and especially with her pride and joy, her granddaughter, Jenna. Jenna and Betty bonded in the kitchen and often enjoyed experimenting and making everything from Christmas cookies and soups to traditional Polish and Ukrainian foods. Family was everything to Betty; she always strove to keep her family ties strong, enjoying her phone calls to relatives near and far. Betty belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and VFW Auxiliary. Betty will be remembered for her patience and pleasant disposition. She faced all situations with resilience and dignity, never complaining and always smiling. Left behind to cherish her memory are her daughters, Gloria Friello (Richard) and Gail Coutant (Steven Walker), her cherished granddaughter, Jenna Coutant Walker, her siblings, Gloria Rice and Walter Tymchyn as well as many nieces and nephews. Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, the late Stanley Staroba and her siblings, Victor, John, Martin and Harry Tymchyn, Anna Carson and Mary Kates. Relatives and friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 6-8pm at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave., Rotterdam. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday at 10am at the funeral home and interment will follow at St. Cyril and Method Cemetery.
