Stamford, NY-Elizabeth "Betty" Matalavage, 90, of Stamford, NY and North Topsail Beach, North Carolina passed away on September 27, 2015 in Schenectady NY after a short, but intense battle with cancer. Betty was the daughter of the late Jessie and John Hamilton of Gilboa, NY. She received a BA degree from SUNY Albany and her Master's from SUNY Oneonta. Betty retired at the age of 55 from Walton Central School and started her teaching career at Margaretville Central School and taught history. Betty met her husband, Tom, their first year of teaching in Margaretville. They were married for 62 years before his death in November 2013. She is survived by her daughter Joan Matalavage of Schenectady and her son Thomas (Susan) of State College. She is also survived by her grandchildrenCassie, Abby, Elle, Jon, Janalee (Bill), Jon and Matthew and great grandchildren. Betty was predeceased by her daughter, Jane. A mass is planned for 10 am on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at St. Gabriel Church, 3040 Hamburg St., Schenectady.Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours prior to the mass at DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave, Rotterdam, 518-355-5770, from 8:30-9:30 am.Burial will be at the Jefferson, NY cemetery at a future date, convenient to the family.The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Penny Lane, Latham NY 12110.
