Elizabeth "Betty" (Taylor) Boucher

Elizabeth J. (Taylor) Boucher (October 9, 1932-February 14, 2021) (Age 88) Elizabeth “Betty” Boucher died at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany, New York on February 14, 2021 following an illness. Betty grew up on Long Island, New York, where she learned to swim from the rocky beaches on Long Island Sound and on one daring day, swam across Hempstead Harbor. As a child, she dreamed of becoming a nurse. She fulfilled that aspiration after graduating from the nursing school at Brooklyn State Hospital. She met her beloved husband, Henry, at a mixer with the Rockland State Hospital nursing school, where he was also a student, and they were married in 1955. As a registered nurse, Betty touched the lives of countless patients and their families, giving them TLC and compassion, stoked with Betty’s ever-present bubbly sense of humor. She retired from Helen Hayes Hospital in 1987, and she and Henry moved from Stony Point to Orange County, New York, where they spent their retirement years. Following Henry’s passing in 2014, Betty moved to Schenectady, where she enjoyed walking through the Central Park Rose Garden, to live near her daughter. Betty adored gardening and reading and was known for ripping through a novel in a day. She looked forward every year to visiting extended family in Vermont’s Green Mountains for fish fries and sing along sessions, and returning to Long Island for the seafood, salt water vistas, and strolls on the boardwalk. But Betty’s greatest passion was focused on her boundless love for her children. She was “Mom” to Merritt Boucher (Mary Anne) who sadly predeceased her in 2017, Mellissa Hinton (Joseph), Edward Boucher (Bernadette), and Elizabeth Bone (Thomas). She was proud of their accomplishments and often expressed that her children were her greatest gifts, when actually it was the other way around. Betty was also a special “Grandma” to Allison Johnson (Richard), Peter Boucher (Laura), Paul Boucher (Heather), Jonathan Boucher (Carrie), Joseph Hinton, Brian Hinton, Connor Hinton, Vincent Boucher, Michelle Speca (Jay), Christopher Boucher, Sarah Bone, and David Bone. She was delighted to be great grandmother to sixteen children. She is also survived by her dear sister, Margaret Schierhorst of Glenwood Landing, New York, to whom she was also a devoted friend, as well as slews of nieces and nephews who remember her fondly as “Aunt Betty.” A private memorial service will be planned in the spring.
