Edwin John Niedhammer Jr

Rotterdam - Edwin J Niedhammer, 94 passed away Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Ellis Hospital. Born in Detroit Michigan, he was the son of Edwin and Olive of Niedhammer. His wife of over 70 years and childhood sweetheart Evelyn Marie Niedhammer passed away on December 10, 2016. His memory will be cherished by his son Mark, daughter Marcia. and son-in-law Richard McDevitt. His grandchildren Tavis and Mrs. Lea McDevitt, Richard McDevitt, Adam and Mrs. Pina McDevitt, his great-grandchildren Evelyn, Sakura, Braeden, and Caleb McDevitt. He is survived by his brother Robert Niedhammer and Mrs. Lillian Niedhammer and is preceded by his brother Bernard Niedhammer and sister Mrs. Margaret Dickey Edwin honorably served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 during World War II in the Solomon Islands as a second torpedo-man. He was the recipient of the good conduct medal, and the Asiatic Pacific, American Theater and Victory Ribbons. He graduated from Draper high school, and attended Vanderbilt University. Edwin was a person of talent with a strong sense of commitment, diligence, and ably served as a design engineer for G.E. Retiring in 1981 he devoted his time as an active volunteer for the Association of the Protection of the Adirondacks. He helped create, produce, and direct the award-winning film the “Adirondacks the Land Nobody Knows” which premiered at the Proctor's theater. An ardent photographer, and conservationist he consulted on the production of the film “Harnessing Nature, Building the Great Sacandaga” His love of nature, flowers, birds, animals, and vistas were his joy. With his family he toured national parks, and the sea shores. Summers spent with his family at the Sacadanga lake, were something he always cherished. He was a happy man who lived a life full of purpose, and commitments kept. With a strong faith he reminded his family to remember “The Guy Upstairs”, resulting in a life that fostered respect, love, and shared happiness. A calling hour will be held on Saturday, January 26 from 10am to 11am at St. Madeleine Sophie's Roman Catholic Church followed by an 11:30 Celebration of the Eucharist at the church. Following the mass military honors will be held in the church vestibule. In lieu of flowers the family has asked that contributions be made in Edwin‘s memory to Saint Madeleine Sophie School 3500 Carman Road in Guilderland.
