Niskayuna – Edward M. Butkiewicz Sr., age 61, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, November 28th, 2017. Born in Brooklyn and raised in the Bronx, Ed was the son of the late Joseph and Luba (Bojko) Butkiewicz. Ed worked for many years as a state corrections officer at Greene Correctional until his retirement in 2004. Previously, Ed worked at his in-laws pizzeria, Mama’s Pizza Oven in Clifton Park. Affectionately known as Big Ed, Ed always enjoyed playing Santa Claus around the holidays for parties and his friends and family. He also enjoyed fishing and rooting for the New York Jets. Each day you could find Ed at Stewart’s buying his NY Post, hard roll, coffee and scratch off tickets. Ed was predeceased, in June of this year, by the love of his life, Maria (Polanski) Butkiewicz. He is also predeceased by one brother, Walter Butkiewicz. Left behind to cherish his memory are his children, Edward Butkiewicz Jr., Tanya Mackley and Michael Butkiewicz, his adored grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Jeremiah and Ariana Mackley, his brother, Chester Butkiewicz (Stephanie), sisters, Elizabeth Parker, Christine Santiago (Bill), Lucy Villamil, Theresa Galarza, Anna Duffy Pickering (John) and Mary Mazzella (Salvano) as well as many nieces, nephews, family and friends. Calling hours will be Monday, December 4th from 8:15-10:15am at the DeMarco-Stone Funeral Home, 1605 Helderberg Ave. in Rotterdam. A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11am at Mt. Carmel Church, Pleasant St., Schenectady. Burial will take place at a later date.
