GLENVILLE - Carl Joseph Windermere George, PhD., 95, passed away peacefully on Thursday December 18, 2025. He was born in Cincinnati, OH on October 24, 1930 to the late Joseph and Mariam Windermere George. Carl joined the military and served during the Korean War. He used the G.I. Bill to finish his BS at the University of Michigan, he then attended Harvard University and earned his PhD in Ethology, studying animal behavior, with fish as his specialty. He had gathered the largest number of specimens of any one person from the Nile, Mediterranean, Aegean Sea, Black Sea, and Lake Baikal in Siberia - the largest fresh water lake on this one earth.
Carl was a professor at Union College and also traveled the world teaching, spending a few years in the Middle East. Carl married Gail Wood, having spent many wonderful years together until her passing.
Carl then married Christine Cameron and together they ran Bluemoon Riding Farm and Conservancy at Willow Ledge. Carl and Chris supported many conservancy agencies, such as the Hudson Mohawk Bird Club, the Iroquois Museum, the Native Nations Land Back Movement, the Pre-Columbian Cemetery of Fly Rd Ext in Glenville. Carl had found bones from a 26 year old Native woman when he and others were dredging Collins Lake.
Carl loved Union College, nature, and everything proper. He strived for excellence and expected it from everyone. He loved his students all over the world. He was known for his generosity and his research in Ecology and Natural History of Aquatic. He was also known for raising money and saving the Nott Memorial at Union College. He was a member of the Adirondack Wild and a part of the Kelly Adirondack Center.
Carl had celebrated his 95th birthday with family and friends of Union College at the Kelly Adirondack Center in Niskayuna at St. David’s Lane on October 25, 2025. He was instrumental in acquiring the Paul Schaeffer home, the funding from John and Honey Jo Kelly. David Gibson has recently written a book: “Paul Schaeffer, A Force of Nature” published by Syracuse University Press.
Survived by his wife, Christine A. Cameron, Class of ‘79 Union BS, Class of ‘95 MST. Chris met Carl fifty years ago in Zoology. Chris had the honor of hearing Professors Pete Tobiesson, George Butterstein, the late John and Barbara Boyer, the late Henry Dutzel, the late Frank Colabria, Tim Dowling, Tim Downing, Rudy Nedigger, Susan Britton, the late Professor Stone, Les Hull, Professor Titus, and the late Bob Schaeffer.
Carl loved his sisters and brothers in law: the Cameron, Catalano, LeClair, Durand, Saviagono, and Butryn families. Carl’s step-children are professors in computer science, literature, geology, chemistry, and law enforcement.
Carl’s steadfast friends at the Dept of Conservation, Barbara Rottier, Val Washington, Hank Steffins, to name a few. Carl contributed to the late Gail Wood George memorial office and the dance program at Union College. Joann Wood of San Antonio, TX has been corresponding for years with Carl and Chris.
These wonderful individuals were known to Carl and Chris and helped make Carl’s last years more enriched: the Yanowitch family, Scott Styles, Josephine Johnson, MD, Professor LoGiudice, Professor John Blanchard, Rich Temple, Mary Hance, W. Peter Pearse, Angelou Mazzone, Janet Grey, Margie Amedeo, Frank and Dawn Wicks, Carol and Jim McCord, Colleen, Eileen, Shawn, Sandy, Corey, Maureen and Steve, Donna and Sean Moffet, Ellen, Sinopolli Dance Company, Dick Tucker, Adirondack Wild Group, the Protect the Adirondacks Posse, Altamont Agway, the Glenville Police, the Scotia Police, Fire and Rescue, the Sheriffs of Montgomery County and Schenectady County, the State Police, the Scotia-Glenville Fire Dept, Beukendaal Volunteer Fire Dept, Dr Constance Glasgow, Dr Ali and her team, and Dr Marzid and his team.
A memorial service will be held in late March at the Nott Memorial, 807 Union St., Schenectady, officiated by the New Scotland Presbyterian Church, Rev Holly Cameron, Rev Larry Diess (retired), and Rev William Mullhulland of Becket Federated Church in MA.
