Cynthia Ann (Peterson) Tygert, 69, went home to be with the Lord on January 29, 2026 with her family by her side after a short illness.
Born April 30, 1956, in Niskayuna, NY, she was the daughter of the late Leonard and Muriel (Woodman) Peterson of Princetown, NY. She is also predeceased by her twin brother Wayne Peterson and sister Sandra (Peterson) Brown.
In 1974, she graduated from Schalmont High School. Her loyalty to her community transpired into a thirty-year career for Schalmont Central School District where she served initially as payroll clerk and later as the administrative assistant for Woestina and the high school before retiring in June 2016. She was a reliable, professional, dependable, and patient colleague who always kept a calm, steady disposition to help alleviate moments of chaos. To her, students were family; she loved hearing about their successes beyond graduation.
A devoted pillar to her community, Cindy’s selflessness left a legacy embodied in service and compassion, a true reflection of her spirit and deeply abiding faith. As a member of the First Reformed Church of Scotia, she was an active member of the Missions Council and worked to support the backpack and free community lunch programs. Having known hunger once as a young mother, Cindy spent her later years working to ensure nobody in her community went without food. She was also a member of the Lady’s Auxiliary of Pine Grove Fire Department where she had lifelong friends that turned into family.
Cindy was infamously known as “Mama T” and was a life member of the US Water Ski Show Team (now ECWSST). For decades she lovingly sewed costumes, meticulously stitching every sequin. She served as an award-winning show director, board member, and secretary. Her infectious laugh and energy brought life to so many shows.
Her most treasured role was serving as a wife, mother, and Mimi. For 39 years she shared a loving marriage with Kent Tygert of Princetown, NY and spent summers at Mariaville Lake with family and friends kayaking, playing wiffleball, going for late-night pontoon rides, and chatting around the fire with s’mores. She appreciated the lively moments with family and friends, yet admired the tranquil beauty of wild flowers and birds. Whether it was baking, cooking, gardening, or driving a tractor, Cindy moved through life with fluidity and strength. She fiercely loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. She gave her full heart and soul to everyone lucky enough to be graced by her presence.
She is survived by her beloved husband Kent; their children Jennifer (Adam) Greer of West Orange, NJ and their children Arden, Marshall, and Kieran; Christina (Nick) Stryjek of Scotia, NY and their children Cassandra, Bowden, and Lilly; and Keith Tygert (Rachel Skavina) of Albany, NY.
Cindy is also survived by her brother Richard Peterson (Marilyn); cousin Gary Gray; nephews Benjamin Peterson (Brooke), Spencer Peterson; niece Chelsey Kimmich (Jim), nephew Tyler Brown (Delaney); niece Katie Wolf (Ryan); sister-in-law Carol Bailey; nephew Joshua Tygert, niece Taraneh Fazzelli; sister-in-law Pamela Tygert; nieces and nephew Mark Tygert, Teresa Kneezel (Tim), Elizabeth Halayko (Brenden); as well as many beloved great-nieces and great-nephews from both sides of the family.
She was predeceased by her brother-in-law Alan Tygert; sister-in-law Carol’s husband Jim Bailey; cousin Dede Gray; and leaves behind cherished memories for all who knew her.
The family would like to thank the compassionate staff at Westchester Hospital who provided guidance, support, and care in Cindy’s final days.
Calling hours will be held at The First Reformed Church of Scotia, 224 N Ballston Ave, Scotia, NY on Tuesday, February 10, 2026 from 4 to 8 pm.
Funeral services will be held at The First Reformed Church of Scotia, Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at noon with lunch to follow in Brink Hall.
Cindy’s wishes were to be cremated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the First Reformed Church of Scotia to their community lunch program/backpack program, or to The American Heart Association.
Cindy’s life was a testament to grace in action—a quiet strength that lifted others up without ever seeking recognition. May her memory bring comfort to those who knew her and continue to inspire acts of kindness for generations to come.
