Cornelia I (Foldesdy) Salamone

August 16, 1922 — August 28, 2022

Guilderland - Cornelia Salamone passed gently from this life on August 28th having recently celebrated her 100th birthday with family, friends, and her church community. Cornelia was born in Bacsgyulafulva, formally Hungary, of Hungarian parents on August 16, 1922. Her life’s journey is remarkable. At age five, she was separated from her parents and forced to flee the oppressive Yugoslavian government for Hungary. A year and a half later she was able to reunite with her family. She received her teaching degree in Hungary 1941 but had to flee for Germany when the Russians invaded and occupied the country at the end of World War II. She emigrated to Detroit, Michigan in 1950 and settled in Schenectady in 1952, and earned her citizenship in 1955. She worked as a volunteer at St. Claire’s Hospital Pastoral Care, Salvation Army Soup Kitchen, and was an assistant manager at the family-owned business, Uniform Village. She was an active member of St. Madeleine Sophie Church. Cornelia is loved and remembered by many for her kindness, strength, and sharp mind. Her grace, wisdom, and genuine love will forever remain in our hearts. She is survived by her niece Rose Vajna, great nephew Gabor Vajna and his two children in Hungary; sister-in-law Rose Salamone, nieces and nephew Bonnie (Lee) Strader, Donna (Harvey) Singer, Elaine (John) Ciccarelli, Kathleen Salamone Garrett, Tom (Anne) Salamone, nine great nieces and nephews, and a great great niece who all affectionately referred to her as “Auntie”, and former spouse Joseph Salamone in the USA. She is predeceased by her son Bobby and granddaughter Brooke. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff and volunteers at the Joan Nicole Prince Home and Community Hospice for their loving dedication to her care in her final days. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial, to which relatives and friends are invited, will be celebrated 10 am Thursday at St. Madeleine Sophie Church 3500 Carman Rd., Guilderland. Burial will follow at Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to St. Madeleine Sophie Church, 3500 Carman Road, Schenectady, NY 12303; the Joan Nicole Prince Home, 22 Glenview Drive, Scotia, NY 12302; Community Hospice, 445 New Karner Road, Albany, NY 12205.
