Ann (Hartshorn) Tomlinson

February 26, 1932 — December 16, 2013

Delmar - Ann Hartshorn Tomlinson died peacefully on Monday December 16, 2013 in Guilderland, New York surrounded by her loving family and devoted dog Macy.Ann was born on February 26, 1932 in Radnor, Pennsylvania to her father Stanley Denton Hartshorn and mother Thelma (Tommy) Evans Hartshorn. She was raised in Radnor, PA with her three sisters Dathy Michell, Sandy Halbkat, and Molly Bengston and spent her childhood summers on Lake Ontario at Henderson Harbor, New York.Ann was a proud member of the Daughter's of the American Revolution (DAR) and the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO) which promotes women in education, and loved the area known as the "Main Line". Ann was an excellent athlete and fierce competitor whom enjoyed sports her entire life. She captained her school field hockey team, excelled at tennis and basketball, and studied Physical Education at the University of Delaware.Sailing became a passion of hers during her teen years at Henderson Harbor where she raced Bantams with her future husband Harold W. Tomlinson (Tommy) and sister Sandra at the Henderson Harbor Yacht Club.Ann and Tommy started their courtship on the water during those summers and spent countless days sailing together the rest of their lives. Together for 57 years, Ann and Tommy raised four children Harold (Tom), Sandy, Martha, and Andrew in Delmar, New York. The family was very active and spent holidays sailing and skiing or recreating at their summer house at Campbell's Point, Sacket's Harbor, New York.Ann and Tommy had numerous close neighborhood friends with whom they played bridge, sailed, and raised their children.Ann loved all animals, especially dogs. She and the family always seemed to have "four-legged" companions. She enjoyed volunteering for school, church, and community groups while raising their children.Ann was dedicated to her children's activities and rarely missed a swim meet, wrestling match, recital, or soccer game in 30 years of parenting. After the children were grown, Ann worked at the American Red Cross for over 10 years until retirement.Later in life and retirement, Ann and Tommy split their time between Campbell's Point in the summers and Hilton Head, South Carolina in winters where they developed many close friendships. Ann's sharp memory will surely be missed. She had an amazing gift for remembering birthdays, events, and special memories of hundreds of extended family members and friends that made her the 'go-to' source for family history.Ann is survived by her four children, sisters Molly and Sandy, eight grand children, twenty nieces and nephews, life-long friend Preshy Tilson, and many friends. A family remembrance service is planned at Henderson Harbor for summer 2014. Online condolences at www.demarcostonefuneralhome.com
