Rotterdam - Angelo Marotta, 81 passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital on June 30, 2025 surrounded by his family. Angelo was born on April 13, 1944, son of the late Frank and Maria (Carese) Marotta in Limatola, Province of Benevento, Italy. He came to Schenectady, NY when he was 13 years old and quickly learned the English language.
Angelo graduated from Mont Pleasant High School and found his craft in carpentry. Certified in construction technology and blue printing, he went on to work many different construction jobs with local builders and conducted many side remodeling projects.
Angelo married the love of his life, Silvana (Sacchetti) Marotta on January 12, 1966. Although he was a skilled carpenter, Angelo had the desire for entrepreneurship. Together, he and Silvana founded the Italian import store Capri Imports in Schenectady in 1968. They both enjoyed sharing traditional Italian foods and specialities with the local community. After successfully running Capri Imports for seven years, the family sold the business to pursue other opportunities. Continuing their love for the food industry, Angelo and Silvana founded Sorrento’s Pizzeria & Restaurant in Rotterdam in 1981, which they operated until their retirement in 1989.
Angelo was an extraordinary man and full of wisdom. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, nonno, great nonno, brother, uncle and a dear friend. Angelo was a humble man of great faith. He learned as he grew up in a family with ten children, that family is everything. Sunday dinners were special, filled with homemade Italian foods, fresh fruits and vegetables from his garden and the best homemade wine! His door was always open.
Angelo was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace and former Festa volunteer, specifically, bread making mentor. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and bocce. Most importantly, Angelo was a kind hearted man that could teach, listen or help anyone in need at any time with a smile on his face. He will be dearly missed by his friends and family near and far.
In addition to his parents, Angelo was predeceased by his brothers, Giuseppe Marotta of Italy, Antonio and Dominic Marotta of Schenectady, his sisters, Ida Columbo of California, Livia Perretta of Schenectady, and his baby daughter Tania Marotta.
Survivors include his wife Silvana of 59 years, his sons Frank (Barbara) Marotta, Antonio (Cheryl) Marotta, his daughter Liciamarie Marotta, his four grandsons - Antonio, Nicholas, Christopher (Nicole), Justin Marotta and two great grandchildren Giavanna and Johnny Marotta.
