Callaghan, Andrew Joseph. 70, passed away on Wednesday Feb 24 at Barnwell Nursing and Rehab Center, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.He was born Christmas Eve, 1945 in the Bronx, NY.He entered the US Army in 1966.After graduating from OSC (Officer Candidate School) he served honorably during the Viet Nam era.Following active duty Andrew remained in the reserves while he attended college.He earned a bachelors degree from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, and a Master's degree in Theology from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington.Andrew continued to serve in the Army reserves Chaplain Corp until he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.Andrew's greatest personal joy was the years he spent teaching religion at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School in Ebensberg, PA .He enjoyed spending time with young people and sharing his enthusiasm for his faith with the next generation.All who knew Andrew will remember him as the Red Sox biggest fan.Andrew is survived by his brother John (Peggy) Callaghan of Chester NY, his sister Eileen (John) Edwards of Guilderland NY, his beloved nieces and nephew Karen, Michelle and John Edwards, his nephew-in-law Robert Kubiak and his two grand nieces Bronwen and Fiona Kubiak.Andrew's battle with Alzheimer's disease has been slow and progressive, his family would like to take this opportunity to thank all those cherished friends and neighbors who reached out to and stood by Andrew over the years. Arrangements have been made by DeMarco Stone Funeral Home in Guilderland.There will be no calling hours. Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, March 4, 2016at 10 a.m. in St. Madeleine Sophie Church in Guilderland. Burial will be in Most Holy Redeemer Cemeteryin Schenectady, NY.
