ROTTERDAM – Abramo Cortese, 94, passed away on Friday, October 20th, 2023. Abramo (Abe) was born in Aquaformosa, Italy. He worked for many years as a mason at various companies, and finally with General Electric where he retired in 1982. He was a US Army veteran serving in the Korean conflict. Abe loved this country, and often commented on how beautiful the American flag was. Abe had a love for gardening, and often had large, beautiful vegetable gardens with the best tomatoes which he took great pride in sharing. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and especially taking his son “Ricky” to local streams and lakes for many years. He enjoyed bowling, snowmobiling, and spending time with his family and friends at their camp on Sacandaga Lake. Abe loved music and enjoyed Alan Jackson and all types of accordion music. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, a true and loyal friend, and role model to so many. Everyone will surely miss his favorite sayings “Son of a Gun” and “So Far So Good”.
Besides his parents Constantino and Maria, Abe is predeceased by his loving wife Stella of 64 years, and is survived by his children, Richard Cortese and Linda (Gary) Kartner, one grandchild, Andrew Kartner, one great grandchild, Mason Kartner, and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Naomi Gallo, and brother-in-law Vincent Gallo.
Abe was loved and made an impact on so many people through his kind and caring manner. His kind nature was always evident as children, and animals were often drawn to him without hesitation. To know him was to love him. A very special note of thanks to the Kingsway Arms Nursing Center, B-wing staff who always showed so much care, kindness, and compassion during all his challenges. Also, a heartfelt thank you to a very special person in his life, Nancy Whitmore who treated Abe as she would her own father with such love and kindness and was always there for him.
